MONDO式麻雀
MONDO式麻雀(MONDO Mahjong) is a mahjong TV program broadcast by MONDO TV since 2012. The program features mahjong games played using groundbreaking new rules devised by MONDO TV, with the aim of adding “unusual fun” and “enhancing the normal mahjong rule” to the game. Every season, professional mahjong players and celebrities are invited to participate in the competition. Up to now, there have been 9 seasons of the program.
MONDO Mahjong is an interesting item-based game. So far, it has more than 10 different items and rules, and each season, a selection of different items and rules are combined to create an enjoyable Mahjong season. This time, 3 MONDO items (a combination from Season 8) will be introduced (and maybe tested in the next club activity) , which aim to:
- enhance the fun factor of the game
- enhance the offensive capabilities of Riichi Mahjong
- expand the defensive options while offensive attacking
- enhance the level of mental thinking required for playing Mahjong
All-Mighty Tiles – The tiles “Red 5 Man”, “Red 5 Sou”, “Red 5 Pin”, and one normal “Haku 白” are replaced by All-mighty tiles, they can and only can be used as any tile of the same type.
Koikoi Rule – Whenever a player wins by Tsumo, they have the right to turn over the winning tile and discard it face down to trigger Koikoi. This means, the player can Tsumo or Ron multiple times.
Discard Barrier – If a player uses a Barrier to discard a tile, this tile cannot be Chi / Pon / Kan / Ron. (2 times/Round, 4 times/Hanchan)
All-Mighty Tiles
The tiles “Red 5 Man”, “Red 5 Sou”, “Red 5 Pin”, and one normal “Haku 白” are replaced by the “☆ Man”, “☆ Sou”, “☆ Pin”, and “☆ Honor” all-mighty tiles. These all-mighty tiles can and only can be used as any tile of the same type.
Note:
- When an all-mighty tile is discarded, it also functions as an all-mighty tile and can be used as any tile of the same type for calling a Chi/Chow, Pon/Pung, Kan/Kong, or Ron.
- When an all-mighty tile is in the hand, it can be used for a concealed Kan.
- If a Kan with all-mighty tile is finished, there will be no further Kan, if you get the real fourth tile.
- Eg. If
⭐🀉🀉🀉
is already used as a Kong, and the fourth🀉
comes, there will be no further Kong for the fourth tile.
- Eg. If
- When using the all-mighty tile, it is possible to have 5 of the same tiles in your hand, and this situation is allowed for winning the game.
- Eg.
⭐ 🀉🀉🀉 🀫🀫🀫 🀫🀫🀫 🀫🀫🀫
is waiting 🀇~🀏 9 different tiles, and if it is finished with the fourth 🀉-tile, it will look like🀉🀉 🀉🀉🀉 🀫🀫🀫 🀫🀫🀫 🀫🀫🀫
, one of them is the ⭐ all-mighty tile and is considered as 🀉, and it is allowed.
- Eg.
- When the Dora-indicator tile is a all-mighty tile, the riichi-winner can declare any tile of the same type as the dora. Any tile you want.
- Please pay attention to Furiten(振聴).

It might be complicated to think about them individually, but if you consider the Ii-Shanten Rule, it's easy to understand. So the All-migthy Tiles will help to improve the technique in Ii-Shanten and Ryan-Shanten.

Koikoi Rule
It is similar to the “Double Up” in Poker or “Koikoi” in Hanafuda(花札). Whenever a player wins by Tsumo, they have the right to turn over the winning tile and discard it face down to trigger Koikoi. The accumulated points will be settled at the next Tsumo/Ron.
A Text Explanation:
Whenever you win by Tsumo with a concealed hand:
- If you choose to declare Tsumo, you will receive points for Tsumo.
- If you choose to Koikoi, you will discard your winning tile face down. After discarding, if any of the following events occur:
- You win by Tsumo again, you may choose to end the game and calculate all the Tsumos or start another Koikoi.
- You declare Ron from other Player, this player will pay the current Ron and the total amount of points for all previous Koikoi Tsumos.
- Another player wins, means Koikoi is invalid. Points payment as normal.
- The game ends in a draw, the round is settled according to the draw rules. The previous Tsumo is wasted.
“with a concealed hand” means 2 situations:
1. First Riichi, then Koikoi
2. Damaten, and you can choose one tile to make Koikoi-Riichi. This tile will not cause Furiten. For this tile will only calculate Menzen Tsumo 1Han 30Fu + Dora (But no Uradora).
The points are only related to a current situation. This means, for example, a Kan with new Doras during the Koikoi does not effect the previous winning hand.
Reasons for adoption:
- can be well matched with All-mighty Tiles (more Tsumo opportunities)
- timing needs to be carefully considered
- provide opportunities for counterattack (eg. chance to earn Yakuman-points without Yakuman)
Discard Barrier
If a barrier is used while discarding a tile, other players cannot Chi, Pon, Kan or Ron with that tile. It can be used at any time, including the riichi moment and before/after riichi.
In a single Hanchan, there are only four chances to use it. If someone is waiting(Tenpai), and the winning tile is discarded with barrier by other players, it is not a Furiten situation.
Reasons for adoption:
- a simple and skill-testing defensive measure because of limited quantities
- add defense to the offensive rule All-mighty Tiles and Koikoi Rule
- Provide security and foundation for an attack or a counterattack (eg. Riichi after someone’s Riichi)

Other interesting items and rules might be introduced next time.
